Holly’s Junk Food Review Series : Hillbilly Treats

July 26, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Wednesday everybody and welcome to another Junk Food Review.  At the expense of possibly offending people with the title today, to be honest, I really just couldn’t think of a better one.  I really didn’t want to call it ‘trash food’ or ‘redneck food’ because nowadays people are always taking offense to something, amiright? so I thought Hillbilly might be less offensive possibly?  What I was really trying to get across, is that sometimes there are foods that you’re mildly embarrassed to admit that you eat, or even want to be seen buying.  I mean, just so y’all know, I had those Fried Twinkies hidden under a bag of lettuce in my cart, and then did self checkout, because I was just in no mood to get that kind of judgement…

Anyways, let’s get to it shall we?  First off, we have Snoballs.  I know that these things have been around for forever, but I recently realized that I had never had them before, which is shocking because they have marshmallows, chocolate cake and coconut, a few things that I love.

seems promising, even with the scary green color…

looks pretty yummy…

Alrighty, so I genuinely had high hopes for these bad boys because as I mentioned above Snoballs contain some of my favorite ingredients and wow were these disappointing.  At first bite, I thought that they were similar to just a regular Hostess creme filled chocolate cake, then the almost plastic taste & texture of the coconut kicked in and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out how they managed to mess up coconut so badly.  The only thing worse was the marshmallow, which left the funkiest after taste in my mouth.  On the bright side, the chocolate cake was soft and moist and the creme filling was pretty tasty.  Overall I give these a 5 out of 10, and I will definitely not be partaking in these again, probably ever.

Okay next we have the Fried Twinkies, which yes, come from the frozen food aisle a special place in hell…

mmm…

Okay y’all, I want to preface this review with the fact that I really, really, really wanted to dislike these things for a multitude of reasons.  First off, I figured anything that is normally consumed at fairs and is freshly (I’m using the term “fresh” loosely here) fried on site wouldn’t translate well to a freezer to be reheated at home.  Secondly, this product is embarrassing to buy and I was hoping to never again have to wear a disguise to buy food again (just kidding, kind of).  Boy was I wrong, y’all, these Fried Twinkies are awesome! I swear, the moment I opened the little bags that they came in and before they were heated up, they totally smelled like the fair (with a side of shame obvi).  OMG, they’re 100x better than regular Twinkies, they come out perfectly hot and decadent from the oven and you will have to control yourself not to burn the ever loving out of your mouth because they smell so amazing.  They are crunchy on the outside and super gooey in the middle.  These are a must taste, they definitely get a 10 out of 10, just let your inner hillbilly out and go get some of these.  Just fyi, I have seen these at Kroger and Wal-Mart, and luckily both have 24 hour locations and self checkout so as not to be seen purchasing this shamefully delicious food haha.

Thanks again for stopping by and I hope you all have wonderful day!!!

Fluffernutter Banana Sandwich

July 24, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Monday everybody!!!  Today’s post will make it abundantly clear -in case it wasn’t already- that I am not a trained chef, pastry chef, etc.  Y’all, it just doesn’t get much more unsophisticated than today’s recipe.

Some might even say that this is on the verge of being a full on kid, possibly hillbilly level of food making, and you know what? I am soo okay with that too.  Speaking of being a kid, I went through a phase when I was about 12 that peanut butter & banana sandwiches were basically on my menu everyday, I was so obsessed, sometimes it was twice a day.

What surprises me the most is that at the time I never even thought to put marshmallow fluff along with the peanut butter and banana, because obviously these combos just freaking work.  Oh, and throwing all of this onto a hot pan to make sure the bread is all toasty, and the ingredients are all warm and melty would have also been a fantastic idea.

I feel bad for 12 year old me (such an awkward age anyway, ammiright?) because this sandwich was so decadently gooey (super duper messy), warm, with all of the flavors that just go together so perfectly, droool.  The grilled aspect of this sandwich really put this fluffernutter banana sandwich to a perfect 10.  If you’re feeling low class key, but really want an amazingly gooey, salty, sweet, fluffy sandwich, I can’t recommend enough you do yourself a favor and cook up one of these today.  Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you all have a fantastic week!!!

Butter first…

then peanut butter…

marshmallow fluff, mmm…

then bananas…

into your pan…

and enjoy!!!

Ingredients
  1. 2 Slices of Honey Wheat Bread.
  2. 2 Tablespoons of Unsalted Butter, Softened.
  3. 2-4 Tablespoons of Creamy Peanut Butter.
  4. 2-4 Tablespoons of Marshmallow Fluff.
  5. 1/2 of 1 Large Banana, Sliced.
Instructions
  1. Spread the butter evenly on each slice of bread, flip them over (I suggest putting them on paper towels so butter doesn't get everywhere).
  2. Now evenly spread the peanut butter on each slice.
  3. Then evenly spread the marshmallow fluff on top of the peanut butter (yes, it's starting to get messy at this point).
  4. Then evenly place your banana slices on each slice, and then carefully put your sandwich together.
  5. Place your sandwich into a pan on medium low heat and grill each side about 1-2 minutes or until golden brown, just watch because the bread burns quickly.
  6. Take out of your pan, cut in half, expect this to be very messy (but delicious) and enjoy!!!
Notes
  1. Feel free to use less or more of any of the listed ingredients.

Holly’s Junk Food Review Series : Doughnuts

July 21, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Friday y’all!!! Oh my is it a happy Friday too.  Someone recently asked me the question, ‘what is your ride or die cheat food?’ Even though I can get in certain moods for certain foods on my cheat days, doughnuts will always be the treat I will go out of my way to get.  I mean, what’s not to love? Delicious yeasty dough (unless cake obvi) fried and covered in sugar?…drooooll.  So anyways back to it being a happy Friday, I will be reviewing a few new-ish doughnuts, one from a very well known establishment and one from a local one, because let’s be real, local is always better—food-wise in my opinion.

First up, we have a couple of doughnuts from Dunkin Donuts, and to be honest they may have already taken them off of the menu because they gotta keep things fresh, but anyways.

Here we have the Chocolate Pretzel Cake Donut…

noms…

So, first off I will admit that I ignored this doughnut for a month or two because I am not a fan of cake doughnuts, solely for the fact that every time I’ve had one they have been dry.  Well, Dunkin, y’all did me good, because this doughnut was incredible.  Moist chocolate cake, with a slight all over glaze, and then topped off with caramel and salty pretzel pieces.  No joke, my mouth is watering even looking at this thing.  I have never been so wrong about a doughnut before, the mixture of the sweet and salty was perfection and this was quality tasting chocolate cake, super noms.  This doughnut gets a solid 10 out of 10.

Here we have the Dunkin Donut cake batter filled doughnut…

mmm, look at that filling and sprinkles…

So this cake batter filled doughnut pleasantly surprised me, I was fully expecting the middle to taste just like every other thick custardy filling in your standard doughnut, but it totally didn’t.  The filling really tasted like cake batter and that mixed with the chocolate topping & sprinkles made this taste especially birthday cake like.  Overall, this is a rich & decadent doughnut.  This one gets a solid 7 out of 10.

Now we’re going to go local and yes I did save the best for last…I had heard for forever that I needed to run over to Paradise Donuts because their doughnuts are just so incredible and fresh, and the only reason I didn’t head over earlier is totally me just being lazy.  I’m not lazy, but looking like a swamp monster in stretchy pants on my cheat day is usually what’s happening in my house, and if it’s not being delivered or cooked by me then I’m not getting it.  This time I planned ahead and showed up when they opened and before I went into full on land monster mode.

I had to show the box because I just thought it was so cute…

  like Heaven in a box…

drooling…

Here we have the most wonderful mix of flavors that include your basic vanilla glazed, Fruity Pebbles, Salted Caramel, Blueberry Cake, Old Fashioned Marble Sour Cream, Raspberry filled and Maple Bacon.  Holy crap y’all, these were absolutely incredible! Like, all of them were incredible.  What’s extra cool is that when I went to the store, after telling the very nice man who worked there that I had never been there before gave me one to try for free.  He handed me the Marble Old Fashioned which I would never have chosen because it’s a cake doughnut, but I am reformed solely from this doughnut.  I loved it so much I bought some too because it was sooo soft and moist.  Oh, I also got an Apple Fritter which was roughly the size of my head, and I gobbled it up before even thinking of taking a picture, oops…Anyways, definitely go and check out a local doughnut shop near you, and if you’re in the Atlanta area, I highly recommend you go check out Paradise Donuts.  My whole experience,  from the insanely nice people who work there to the quality doughnuts they’re creating gives this place a solid 10 out of 10 and if I wouldn’t sound like a complete dork a 20 out of 10 😀

Thanks so much for stopping by and have a wonderfully doughnut filled weekend!!!

Easy Nutella Mousse

July 17, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Monday everybody!!!  I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend and are ready to jump right into the new week, and if not, I’m here today to bring y’all a little easy something to make to hopefully brighten your Monday.

I would like to preface this delicious treat by admitting that Nutella is not my must-have go-to condiment–is it a condiment?–I guess it’s a spread, well whatever, I’m always #teampeanutbutter but due to the sheer amount of Nutella stuff popping up recently I decided to give it another shot.

I really mean that by the way, I had not tasted Nutella in about 10 years, and could honestly not remember fully what it tasted like.  To my delight, Nutella is better than I remembered, but wowza is it rich, very chocolatey, very hazelnutey, and very sugary.  Not that I dislike any of those things, but let’s just say I could sit down and eat a whole jar of peanut butter, and I can guarantee that sounds like the worst idea ever with Nutella.

So, after deciding that Nutella was in fact delicious, just extremely rich, I thought maybe a dessert made with Nutella, just toned down a bit would be awesome.  I came across this recipe and was all, ‘yeah Imma need to make that’ and soo glad I did. Holy cow y’all, this mousse was sooo stinking easy to make it’s not even funny, and not to mention insanely delicious.

This mousse is light, fluffy and with the perfect amount of that rich Nutella flavor without it being overwhelming.  I had this dessert whipped up in about 10 minutes, and only had to wait for it to chill in the fridge to fully set up.  If you’re in a hurry or not feeling making a full on dessert, this is a great one to make in no time at all.

I hope everyone has a wonderful start to the week and thank you so much for stopping by!

Key Lime Crack Mix

July 14, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Friday everybody!!! It is so that time of year you guys, all things key lime and even better, no bake, because it’s just a little bit warm just about everywhere, amiright?  I looove cereal mixes so much, they’re quick, they’re easy and oh so satisfying.  I mean, in my opinion, it doesn’t get much better than sweet, salty and crunchy.

This particular crack mix (and yes it is definitely that addicting I’m forewarning you) adds another element of flavor with a tart kick.  Why in the world didn’t I think of this recipe?!  Seriously I had this stuff in the fridge ready to set in less than 15 minutes.  Oh my goodness you guys, the first bite far exceeded any and all expectations that I had for this delicious mix.  It’s the perfect mixture of all of the flavors, and you get a little bit of everything in every bite.

You get the softness of the marshmallows, the salty bite of the pretzels, and then you throw in my favorite cereal mixed with one of my favorite zingy fruits, y’all forget it.  There was zero self control once this stuff was made, I kept telling myself that I would enjoy it all cheat day long and this was pretty much gone within in an hour.  I’m telling you, the “crack” in the title is legit.  Please just do yourself a favor and make this incredible snack ASAP, it is way too good to not enjoy this weekend.  I hope you all have a wonderful Friday and thank you so much for stopping by!

Holly’s Junk Food Review Series : Cereal

July 12, 2017 By Holly

Happy Wednesday everybody! and welcome to another installment of my Junk Food Review Series.  Recently I mentioned my lifelong love of cereal, and that it is always a staple on my cheat days because having just one measly serving is just not going to happen.  I have my favorites (hello Golden Grahams & Lucky Charms) but I’m always on the lookout for new ones to try.

First up, we have the new Cinnamon Frosted Flakes…

look at all of that cinnamon goodness…

I have to preface this review with the fact that I absolutely love Frosted Flakes, so I really had high hopes for this one.  From the moment I opened the box I could totally smell the cinnamon, which is a good thing because, yum.  This cereal has all of the awesome sweet crunch of regular Frosted Flakes but the addition of the cinnamon totally gives this such a wonderful warm toasty taste, and it totally stays crunchy.  This cereal is a new favorite and it definitely gets a 10 out of 10, I absolutely love this cereal!

Next up we have a cereal with apparently no real name, just Keebler Cereal, which should have given me an idea at the quality of this particular item.

seems promising…

Alrighty, I was initially intrigued by the whole cookie and chocolate thing, and there really wasn’t much of that to be found in this cereal, like at all.  When I say that this was basically mildly chocolate flavored cardboard with milk on it, I’m really not exaggerating.  This is hands down one of the worst cereals I’ve ever had.  I really didn’t think something that was supposed to be cookie and chocolate flavored could taste so bad.  Y’all, I didn’t even finish the bowl if that tells you anything, this cereal gets a 1 out of 10, womp, womp.

Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you all have a wonderful day!

Big Mug Banana Bread

July 10, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Monday y’all!!!  I hope everyone had a fantastic weekend, and I’m assuming some of y’all are still even recovering from The Fourth of July.  No judgement here, I know how hard some of y’all celebrate with food, because obvi, that’s how I get down.  I literally think I stood for 9 hours straight, just cooking, anyone else ever done that?

You’re at hour number 1 million 4, and you start to question all of your life choices why in the world you thought it would be a good idea to commit to making so many food items.  Also, it’s not just the cooking, it’s the whole cleaning up, putting up, cutting up, etc. that also has to happen…seriously I’m getting tired sitting here reliving it haha.  It’s a week or so later when you can have another cheat day that you realize the absolute last thing you feel like doing is cooking, baking, prepping absolutely anything, but dang, some banana bread sounds really phenomenal.

Very specific, but yes, I’m sure daydreaming about my Banana Bread Bottom Cheesecake is what set off the incredible need want for delicious, flavorful banana bread, mmmm.  I have had plenty of mug cakes before and they have all been super awesome, so I’m not sure why I seem to forget they exist and don’t make them as frequently as I should.  Well, that was remedied with this Big Mug Banana Bread.  Y’all, I was definitely skeptical, because when you “bake” stuff in the microwave, there is always the fear it will turn out dry, but no need for that here, because this banana bread turned out perfectly.

Seriously, this stuff was basically the texture of banana bread pudding, sooo moist, so rich and just a really lovely banana bread.  I put whipped cream on mine, but I think a big giant scoop of vanilla ice cream would also be amazing.  If you’re looking for a super quick and super easy dessert, this is the one for you.  Thank you so much for stopping by and I hope you have a wonderful day!

Golden Graham S’mores Bars

July 7, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Friday everybody!!!  Before we get into this delicious post, I am going to ask y’all a big huge, gigantic favor to please go vote for me HERE .  I know, it has nothing to do with food, but music is and has always been a gigantic part of my life (I even have a Bachelor’s in Music Business), and I thought it would be cool to join in on the competition 😀  You’ll see my mug when you scroll down a bit,  and if you could please log in and please give me 5 music notes that would be soooo awesome and appreciated.  So now that’s out of the way, lets get to the deliciousness shall we?

Apparently “Smummer” is in full swing which is obviously 100% A-OK with me.  Just in case you hadn’t heard, Smummer is basically S’mores everything for the summertime which makes me sooo happy because I pretty much practice “Smear,” …that sounds weird, scratch that, let’s just say that S’mores are never in season for me, they are enjoyed all year round, I love them that much.

Also, Golden Grahams just happen to be hands down one of my favorite cereals ever too.  Just so y’all know, I literally keep zero cereal in the house on non cheat days, and yes that includes “healthy” cereals too,  because I have no self control, cereal is definitely my drug of choice (next to doughnuts, obvi).  So, a favorite cereal like Golden Grahams is definitely a fixture on my cheat days.

I was feeling especially  hangry  hungry for all things cereal, crispy treat and s’mores a few days before my big cheat day and I just knew that they all needed to be combined into one delicious, yet simple treat.  Y’all, I’m for real drooling at the thought of these bars.  I’m obsessed with these bars, the golden grahams are so crunchy, the marshmallows are nice and gooey and there is just enough chocolate in them to pop.  Mmmm, please, just go make these, they’re super simple and super duper tasty.  I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend and thank you so much for stopping by!!!

the best way to start things, with butter…

and forgot to show all of the marshmallows when I put them in the pot, but here they are melted…

and the pic w/everything mixed and with the added chocolate chips was so blurry, I just couldn’t add it, so here’s everything in the pan cooking in the oven…

Holly’s Junk Food Review Series: Peanut Butter Candy

July 5, 2017 By Holly

Happy Wednesday everybody!!! Today’s post was bound to happen because peanut butter has been my forever love… like, forever…I am especially partial to peanut butter and chocolate together, so with several new peanut buttery/chocolatey items having come out recently they were a must try.

So, let’s get to it, first we have the Reese’s Pieces Big Cup…

Umm, excuse me Hershey Company, but are you guys mind readers or something? I mean seriously, y’all just combined 2 of my absolute favorite candies into one, holy moly.  For a split second I was concerned that it would be too much Reese’s peanut butter cup because these things are pretty massive, but I can also be really silly sometimes too.  These peanut butter cups are incredible, the crunch of the Reese’s Pieces inside the giant peanut butter cup is sooo delicious.  If you love both candies equally as well, then these are perfect for you.   These get a solid 9 out of 10,  and the only reason they didn’t get a 10 out of 10 is because they are so big I could only eat one in the packet instead of both of them.  ***as a side note, I have since bought the mini version of these, and they are just as amazing***

Next, we have the Butterfinger Peanut Butter Cups…

So, I almost didn’t buy these, and I can honestly say that would have been a terrible mistake on my part.  I love Butterfingers, I love peanut butter, but I wasn’t so sure about the combo.  Whoa buddy, these are hands down my new favorite candy that I have tried in the past couple of years (this is no exaggeration).  These are the absolute most perfect combination of Butterfinger mixed with peanut butter, you can taste both ingredients equally, and they bring out the best in each flavor.  There is just the slightest little crunch in the middle like Butterfingers have, but the softness of the chocolate and peanut butter then kicks in.  These are magic, I don’t know what else to say except just go get some of these.  I (obviously) give these a 10 out of 10.

Lastly, we have the Reese’s Crispy Crunch…

So, you know those granola bars that literally break into a billion pieces when you barely touch them?  Yeah, just imagine that except with peanut butter and chocolate.  This candy bar isn’t terrible tasting or anything, it’s just nothing special and incredibly messy.  I get that in the name of the candy bar it says ‘crispy and crunchy’ but apparently that wasn’t enough warning for me, because this stuff got everywhere.  Overall, this candy bar just tastes like a crunchy, peanut buttery, semi-chocolate thing with nothing that differentiates it from any other candy with the same stuff in it.  I give this a 5 out of 10 because I didn’t even bother finishing this candy bar and I have no intention of buying one again.

Thanks so much for stopping by and if you have something you would like me to review, give me a shout!

Have a wonderful day!!!

Repost–Southern Salsa

July 3, 2017 By Holly

Happy Happy Monday y’all!!! and early Happy Fourth of July!!!  This post is from a couple of years ago and is such an easy and delicious recipe, I thought it would be awesome to share with your friends and family tomorrow, so here we go!!!  I hope you get to enjoy this delicious salsa, have a fantasticly fun and safe Fourth and thank you so much for stopping by!!! 😀

southern-salsa| HollysCheatDay.comI bring to y’all today Southern Salsa, also known as Southern Caviar which obviously makes people think of fish eggs, which doesn’t sound appetizing, which makes me call it Southern Salsa…anyways…I have to admit I was super skeptical about this recipe when my mom gave it to me.

southern-salsa| HollysCheatDay.comYes there’s some good pieces to the puzzle but I was worried about how they would all come together (vinegar, Tiger Sauce, sugar?!?!) Well, I should have known better than to doubt the recipes my mom gives me because this dip is the bee’s knees.

southern-salsa| HollysCheatDay.comThe sauce and corn make it quite a bit sweeter than I had expected (which is a good thing), but there is also a tangy kick too, and the softness of the black eyed peas and the crunch of the bell pepper and onion makes for one heck of an awesome dip.  Just try having one bite of this stuff, this dip is full on addictive.  Enjoy y’all!

Start with your black eyed peas…

THE SALSA
  1. 2 Cans of Black Eyed Peas, Drained and Washed.
  2. 1 Can of White Corn Kernels, Drained.
  3. 1/4-1/2 of a Vidalia Onion, Chopped.
  4. 1/2 of a Red Bell Pepper, Diced.
  5. Salt and Pepper to Taste.
THE SALSA SAUCE
  1. 1/2 Cup of Granulated Sugar.
  2. 1/2 Cup of White Vinegar.
  3. 2 Tablespoons of Tiger Sauce.
FOR THE SALSA
  1. Pour both cans of your black eyed peas into your strainer, thoroughly rinsing them off with water, then place into your bowl.
  2. Drain your corn and place into your bowl with your black eyed peas.
  3. Dice up your bell pepper and place into your bowl and mix all of these ingredients together with a spoon.
  4. Chop your onion into small pieces (or larger if that is your preference), then place into your bowl--you may use more or less onion depending on your tastes.
FOR THE SALSA SAUCE
  1. In a separate medium sized bowl place your sugar, vinegar and tiger sauce, then whisk these ingredients together until well combined.
  2. Now pour your sauce onto your salsa, mixing well, then salt and pepper to taste.
  3. Either serve immediately with chips or cover and place in fridge--the flavors get even better when they sit for an hour or more.
